ULTCW Members and In-Home Care Recipients Featured In News

Photo of Olga Marquez and Frances Deeds(Feb 8, 2010) ULTCW members Olga Marquez and Carla Eastman were featured in news stories this weekend with their in-home care recipients. Olga Marquez and Frances Deeds were featured in Sunday’s Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, while Carla Eastman and Dorothy Liedtke were featured in the The Sun. Both stories focused on the Governor’s desire to eliminate the in-home care program and the profound and devastating affect this would have on the 465,000 low-income senior and disabled citizens who receive in-home care and the 350,000 caregivers who provide it.

Special thanks to Olga, Carla, Francis and Dorothy for taking the time to share their stories to ensure that San Bernardino County residents understand the dangers of the Governor’s proposed cuts to IHSS.

PASADENA, CA (1/18/2010) – Today, over 200 SEIU ULTCW members rallied in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena to show their support for plaintiffs in the Martinez/Yang versus Schwarzenegger - the lawsuit which challenged the Governor’s attempts to slash the state’s contribution toward in-home caregiver wages to minimum wage as part of his 2009/2010 state budget.

GOV SCHWARZENEGGER ANNOUNCES PROPOSED CUTS TO IHSS IN HIS 2010/11 BUDGET

(January 8, 2010) Today, Governor Schwarzenegger released his proposed budget for the 2010/2011 fiscal year which includes cuts to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program. In his budget the Governor is proposing that IHSS be restricted to only those consumers with a functional index score of 4.0 and higher (scale of 1-5), and that the State’s contribution toward provider wages be cut to minimum wage. The Governor is also threatening to eliminate the entire IHSS program if the federal government doesn’t provide the state with $6.8 billion in funding.

We are still analyzing the full budget and will post new details as they come in, along with specific details on what you can do to stop these draconian cuts.
