SEIU Members Defeat Governor Schwarzenegger's Attempt to Cut Homecare Wages

SEIU Members Defeat Attempt to Cut Homecare Wages

On Wednesday, March 3, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower courts preliminary injunction which stopped Governor Schwarzenegger's 2009/2010 budget cut to reduce the state's maximum contribution toward in-home caregiver wages from $11.50 to $9.50 an hour.

"This ruling by the Court is a great victory for all Californians," said Laphonza Butler, President-Elect of SEIU-ULTCW. "It sends a clear message to the Governor that he can't balance the state's budget on the backs of thousands of hardworking in-home caregivers."

ULTCW members played a major leadership role in this lawsuit as hundreds provided written testimony or attended the hearings that were held in Oakland last fall and in Pasadena in February.

ULTCW Members and In-Home Care Recipients Featured In News

Photo of Olga Marquez and Frances Deeds(Feb 8, 2010) ULTCW members Olga Marquez and Carla Eastman were featured in news stories this weekend with their in-home care recipients. Olga Marquez and Frances Deeds were featured in Sunday’s Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, while Carla Eastman and Dorothy Liedtke were featured in the The Sun. Both stories focused on the Governor’s desire to eliminate the in-home care program and the profound and devastating affect this would have on the 465,000 low-income senior and disabled citizens who receive in-home care and the 350,000 caregivers who provide it.

Special thanks to Olga, Carla, Francis and Dorothy for taking the time to share their stories to ensure that San Bernardino County residents understand the dangers of the Governor’s proposed cuts to IHSS.
