Seniors Meet to Build Bridges and Get More Involved
by Rose Dimal & Fermin Calleros
On behalf of the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA), Sandy Goldfarb educated the seniors about an opportunity to learn leadership skills in Malibu for free. Roberta Meizlik and Mary Gillion talked about their personal experience in learning leadership skills when they attended the previous session. Roberta gave a two-minute speech about her experience and about the public speaking skills she learned. Because of this program Roberta and Mary are now encouraged and equipped to go out and make a difference in many people’s lives. They now represent many seniors who share the same belief and passion.
Tristan Brown, who works in the political department, explained how the IHSS budget cuts could negatively affect the senior community. He stressed the importance or their participation. He emphasized how one letter could make all the difference. He asked the Senior Association members to help by writing a handwritten letter to Governor Schwarzenegger, opposing the cuts he has proposed.
Although serious topics were broached that morning in the hall of Alexander Hughes Community Center, enjoyable entertainment also took place. The Chinese Association Ever Green Senior Club performed two dances. The dancers themselves were seniors, averaging 70 years of age. “They dance like angels,” said Amanda Figueroa, secretary treasurer, when introducing the organization. The Chinese Association Ever Green Senior Club consists of other seniors with the same vision for the senior community.
A representative from The American Lung Association also educated the crowd about lung disease and how they could get involved to be more knowledgeable. Many people don’t know, but the fourth leading cause of death is lung disease and an average of 473 new cases of lung cancer detected every day find that 237 of those 473 will die before they reach their five year mark.
To conclude the event, the ULTCW Action Team Interns informed the seniors about another opportunity to be more involved in their community. The interns have organized a community clean up event and asked for volunteers. The event will take place this Saturday, August 16 at two different locations. If you are interested please contact Erika Cansicio at 323.491.5049 or Ashley Mardueno at 323.787.3879.
Everyone walked out of the Alexander Hughes Community Center geared with information and ready to get involved. For those interested in learning more about the Senior Association and their coalition partners feel free to contact Victoria Browder at 213.725.3705.
